We are able to cut most substrate. We will be able to tell you whether we can cut it by seeing it or by name. We don’t cut metal and glass. Our years of experience in laser cutting (since 2002) makes it possible to set the laser at the best and correct setting for your substrate ensuring the fastest and cleanest cut. At present our lasers can cut up to 30mm thick Perspex and 9mm mdf (supa-wood). Paper and cardboard we cut any thickness.

Line bending acrylic & forming

We do line bending on Perspex and quite a few other substrates. Let us show
you how we can bend your project.

A Perspex box can be made in many different ways. We can cut different size
panels and glue them together, this method is not suitable for all
applications. Cutting one piece of acrylic and engraving bend lines onto it
for accuracy and then bending it to form a box is a very solid way of making
a box. This method ensures minimum glue is used in the process and generally
is much stronger. When working with acrylic / Perspex line bending is an
integral part of most designs. We bend from 0,5mm up to 10mm acrylic. Line
bending is a process where you heat Perspex via an element

In a straight line. Once the Perspex reaches it optimal heat

for bending it should be removed from the bender and

bent to the desired degree. Acrylic will bubble if over heated

and then needs to be discarded. It is an art that requires

some practice to perfect.

Stencils make it Paint-by-Numbers!

In recent times we at Cape Craft Services have seen a steady increase in mommies waiting for their special day, and they all have had the same request – “I want to decorate my nursery, any ideas?”  The easiest way we can assist is by showing them a range of stencils by use of which even the most artistically challenged person can sketch and paint a variety of designs in any size you like on a plain wall to transform a room almost magically.

While the baby boomers have discovered the ease of stencils (and they are great because they are re-useable), decorating fundi’s have for years been frequenting our doorstep in search of that special motif to complement a specific fabric, or to create a visually appealing accent in space that would otherwise have been dead and lent nothing to the total “look” of a room.  We have designed a range of unique stencils (Click on the cupcake wrapper and stencil link elsewhere on this page to visit the gallery) to suit every taste, level of skill and budget.  Even just a stenciled fake dado rail can transform the ordinary into something spectacular.  All that is needed is some time, a little bit of paint and imagination, and a stencil, of course.

If you do not want to paint a wall, how about designing your own stencil and use it to create your own designer fabric?  With the matric ball season nearly upon us it is the perfect time to perfect your fabric painting techniques, and to make sure NO-ONE has even the same fabric design as yours – be the belle of the ball this year!

Besides the decorative uses of stencils, we find a major application is in the marking of equipment or belongings.  If you are going to use a larger format stencil with lettering, we have designed stencils with handles and over-spray guards to facilitate the quick marking of objects using tins of spray paint.  Come talk to us if you require something similar!

The Wedding Planner

Being right in the middle of “Wedding Planning Season” (in South Africa at least), we have from a fringe spectator perspective seen a trend to move away from the traditional two or three tier wedding cake to individual cupcakes.  While this trend has been entrenched in America for a while, it is becoming more prevalent in South Africa as well, and the reason we have noticed is that we are more and more often being requested to laser cut cupcake wedding wrappers.

We have been involved in cutting wedding paraphenalia since our inception, creating invitations, table numbers, menus, thank you cards – frankly all the specialised wedding stationary you can think of, but we have recently been making cupcake wrappers more and more often.  They are the perfect final touch to what is often miniature works of art.  To get an idea of what we are talking about, check the stencil and cupcake page … there are standard designs that we designed specifically with the wedding planning season in mind, and we will update fairly often with new ideas.

To celebrate the upcoming wedding season, we are planning to sponsor a bride’s laser cutting requirements; Menus, Table Numbers, cupcake wrappers, invitations, “Thank-you” cards, or anything that the bride might want cut for her big day.  Included will be design of unique items for the great occasion.  We will announce this competition soon, so keep checking back with us.

Wedding gifts … Be unique!

It is Wedding Season yet again (in sunny South Africa at least), and the headache of finding the perfect wedding gift is a big one, especially on a limited budget.  Instead of the normal drying cloths and teaspoons, why not be a bit more creative?

How about having a custom designed cutting board (either from wood or Plexiglass) onto which you can engrave the names of the happy couple.  I prefer the Plexiglass option, as you can have a full design engraved in reverse on the bottom of the cutting board, which is then visible from the top while you chop away at those onions!  Yes, the Plexiglass will mark with extended use, but it is the thought that counts, is it not?  And then, it could make a beautiful kitchen decoration instead of a chopping block, and the happy couple can be reminded of your originality at every cooking episode.

Ok, so having an engraved chopping block is not the most practical of gift ideas, but you must admit it has made you think about that elusive “perfect” gift.  How about having a perspex mirror made for the newly weds commemorating their day?  Two colours are available – the traditional “silver” mirror or “gold” mirror.  Laser engraving on the reverse side, you can create any design to show through on the mirror side – you don’t need to stop at the traditional “mirror on the wall” idea; what about a set of coasters, or placemats or even designing a tile mosaic for a bathroom or entrance area.  The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.  Engrave a photograph of each of the closest family members on a set of coasters, or as a tile; the perfect heirloom for the couple to decorate their new home with.

Chances are it is YOUR wedding you are planning, and you are looking for something to give your guests to remember the occasion by.  How about a Perspex mirror coaster / swizzle stick combination engraved with a monogram of you and your betrothed’s initials? Not only will it add that touch of glamour and glitz to the occasion, but will find pride of place in your guests trove of memories.  If you have the budget, you can even have the placemats made out of Perspex mirror and include that as a part of the gift set!

Weddings are all about the “look” and presentation (if you leave the couple and guests out of the equation), and using laser cutting and engraving you can create the most intricate and beautiful designs – Invitations, thank you cards, seating arrangements, menus, table numbers … anything that you can think of, even table decorations!  With the trend of eschewing the traditional two or three tier wedding cake in favour of cupcakes, laser cut cup cake wrappers is the newest wedding item to see the light. Cupcakes is the perfect way to allow for a number of different tastes in cake, and creates an opportunity for miniature masterpieces for guests to enjoy, or to take home.

November Newsletter

It has been a while since our last communication, but we are happy to announce that we have had opportunity to get up to date with placing new images of projects we have completed in our website galleries. You are most welcome to have a look at our website, http://capecraft.co.za and especially the “Services” tab to view examples of our newest work.

The majority of our recent orders has been trophies, and we will be updating the website soon with pictures of our more interesting trophies. If you have any events or ceremonies in the pipeline for the end of the year for which you will be requiring trophies, we urge you to get your order in as soon as possible so that you can have them in time.

We have also been represented in the national media quite regularly in the last while, making the pages of You Magazine, Huisgenoot, Elle Decorating, House and Leisure and Sarie Magazine in the last few months. We have also made a local paper with our support of the Parow Police Service Sector, supplying and installing signage (printed and die-cut vinyl stickers and vinyl lettering) for the two Community Centres.

Cape Craft Services does it again!

Cape Craft Services, the premier laser cutting and engraving venture in South Africa, has yet again been approached by a national media company to make and supply stencils for distribution with one of their publications as part of an advertising drive.

This kind of request is nothing new to them, with their work having been showcased in a number of lifestyle and decorating magazines, and even on South African national television in the lifestyle program Top Billing. They have had the privilege of working with top international fashion designers as well, where laser technology has been used in the construction of wedding gowns.

With all these accolades, Cape Craft Services has always been built on one basic premise – quality work coupled with great service. We are proud to annouce the launch of the revamped and much-improved Cape Craft Services website! Many months in the planning and long weeks in development, it showcases the best of our work, in all of our divisions, and offers functionality that will make your Cape Craft Services website experience one to remember, and want to visit again and again. We in fact urge you to visit often, as there will be regular updates, especially in the galleries, as every new product worth mentioning will be displayed to inspire your next creation we can assist you with.  Take the time to peruse all the services we offer; it has been our experience that even established clients are often unaware of the wide range of requirements we can assist with.

With the launch of the site, we are also embarking on an "industry-first" in South Africa … The Do It Yourself (DIY) Sign. The idea is to offer anyone anywhere the opportunity to specify their vinyl-cut lettering sign requirements, which we will quote on, then cut and have couriered… anywhere in the world.  The sign arrives with application tape already in place, a squeegee and instructions.  All you need to do is either follow the printed instructions (included), or watch the application videos on the site. CLICK HERE to see the videos – they are at the bottom of the page. While the DIY Sign is primarily intended for Vinyl-cut Lettering Signs, you may order full-colour printed Vinyl stickers or any other signage applications. We offer Stencils, and lettering cut from Perspex. Within the next week we will have the functionality to upload your designs directly to us added. In the mean time, send us an e-mail with your design attached.

In terms of functionality, please note the "Contact Us" section, where you have direct access to us to request quotes on your requirements.  We will get back to you within 24 hours (normally that means the next day) unless we are dealing with weekends, public holidays or other unforseen circumstances.

You will also notice we have added a "Clients" section where we feature products developed by our premier clients.  If you are a client and would like to have your final products added in a gallery on our site we will be willing to do so. Drop us a line at contact@capecraft.co.za.

We have also been appointed the first agent for the new Colop Embossing Press. This press allows you to emboss any stationary to make it a unique item, and it does not end at paper!  This press can emboss gold foil, aluminium foil, thin leather, vinyl … The list is as long as your imagination!  It comes in three sizes – Round – 41mm and 51 mm diameter, and rectangular 25 x 50 mm. You WILL be IMPRESSED!!

Colop Embossing Press

Ever wanted to make your stationary just that bit more unique, or wanted to add some old-world flair to an invitation? An embossed seal (raised emblem) has always been a favourite method of mine, but to get embossed seals done for small runs like invitations has proven to be prohibitively expensive time after time.

Enter the Colop Embossing Press. This handy 2 in one (hand and table) unit brings the functionality of much more expensive processes to the office, home and school without having to pay a premium price. The press presents in three standard imprint sizes, two round selections at 41mm and 51mm in diameter, and one rectangular size measuring 25 x 50mm. The embossing masters (one positive, one negative in between which the medium to be embossed goes) can be retrofitted with new designs of the same shape and size if you choose to have more than one design. The unit itself is compact enough for hand-held use, but an optional table socket is available for use in longer press runs or embossing more sturdy material.

While, as mentioned, seals are a personal favourite, it is by no means the only medium to which the embossing press can be applied. Any material that is flexible enough to be distorted and then can keep this new shape can be used effectively. Aluminium foil, vinyl, paper of various thicknesses, thin plastic, parchment, grease paper, even thin (split-hide) leather … the list can probably go on, but you get the idea. Now that extra-special wedding invitation, your corporate stationary, your institution of learning’s academic diplomas and certificates (or any other application you can think of) can have that hallmark of quality and individuality that will set it apart from the ordinary.

This new little wonder has just arrived on South African shores, and Cape Craft Services has been appointed the first dealer in the Western Cape to carry this as part of their range. They have a long-standing relationship with Colop in South Africa, and have the technology and expertise to custom-make Embossing Press masters to client specifications.
