Hacker Opens High Security Handcuffs With 3D-Printed And Laser-Cut Keys

The security of high-end handcuffs depends on a detainee not having access to certain small, precisely-shaped objects. In the age of easy 3D printing and other DIY innovations, that assumption may no longer apply.

In a workshop Friday at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference in New York, a German hacker and security consultant who goes by the name “Ray” demonstrated a looming problem for handcuff makers hoping to restrict the distribution of the keys that open their cuffs: With plastic copies he cheaply produced with a laser-cutter and a 3D printer, he was able to open handcuffs built by the German firm Bonowi and the English manufacturer Chubb, both of which attempt to control the distribution of their keys to keep them exclusively in the hands of authorized buyers such as law enforcement.

The demonstration highlights a unique problem for handcuff makers, who design their cuffs to be opened by standard keys possessed by every police officer in a department, so that a suspect can be locked up by one officer and released by another, says Ray. unlike other locks with unique keys, any copy of a standard key will open a certain manufacturer’s cuff. “Police need to know that every new handcuff they buy has a key that can be reproduced,” he says. “Until every handcuff has a different key, they can be copied.”

Unlike keys for more common handcuffs, which can be purchased (even in forms specifically designed to be concealable) from practically any survivalist or police surplus store, Bonowi’s and Chubb’s keys can’t be acquired from commercial vendors. Ray says he bought a Chubb key from eBay, where he says they intermittently appear, and obtained the rarer Bonowi key through a source he declined to name. Then he precisely measured them with calipers and created CAD models, which he used to reproduce the keys en masse, both in plexiglass with a friend’s standard laser cutter and in ABS plastic with a Repman 3D printer. Both types of tools can be found in hacker spaces around the U.S. and, in the case of 3D printers, thousands of consumers’ homes.

Over the weekend, a lockpick vendor at the HOPE conference was already selling dozens of the plexiglass Chubb keys for a mere $4 each. Ray says he plans to upload the CAD files for the Chubb key to the 3D-printing Web platform Thingiverse after the annual lockpicking conference LockCon later this week.

I reached out to both Chubb and Bonowi’s parent company Assa Abloy over the weekend, and will update this story when I hear back from them.

Ray also tried creating duplicate plexiglass key for high-security handcuffs from the German manufacturer Clejuso, but found that when the cuffs were fully secured the plexiglass wasn’t strong enough to overcome their internal springs. an attendee at the workshop helpfully suggested he try laser-cutting the stronger material Lexan instead.

Ray, who typically works as a computer security consultant but has also advised the German police on handcuff technology, says his goal isn’t to reduce handcuffs’ security so much as to exposing their vulnerabilities. His tools, he argues, are already available to criminals along with the rest of the public. “If someone is planning a prison or court escape, he can do it without our help,” says Ray. “We’re just making everyone aware, both the hackers and the police.”

What’s It Like: To get Lasik surgery

Why get Lasik?

Anyone who has ever lost a pair of glasses or had a contact lens slip under an eyelid has probably contemplated Lasik surgery.

LASIK stands for Laser-assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. It is a laser surgery in which the cornea is reshaped to improve vision.

To have clear vision, your eye’s cornea and lens must bend light rays properly. This allows images to be focused clearly on the retina. if the shape of your cornea is different from the length of your eye, you will have blurry vision. The cornea is the clear, curved surface at the front of the eye where light enters the eye.

During Lasik, the cornea is reshaped to reduce refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. The goal of Lasik is to get you out of your contacts or glasses for the majority of time.

It is important to talk with your doctor about realistic expectations of Lasik.

Most medical insurance will not pay for Lasik. Pricing can vary from doctor to doctor, so it is important to discuss how the doctor performing your surgery charges for Lasik. Lasik quotes are usually provided for each eye individually. Conventional Lasik with a microkeratome flap costs between $1,000 and $2,500 per eye. Custom Wavefront Lasik with an all-laser flap usually ranges between $1,500 and $3,000 per eye. if the price is quoted at a significantly lower rate, there might be a catch. Pricing gimmicks are sometimes used to make Lasik appear more affordable.

Not everyone can get Lasik. if you’re not a good candidate for Lasik, you can talk with your doctor about other corrective surgeries.

Age is one factor that keeps people from getting Lasik. you must be 18 to be considered for Lasik because there aren’t any lasers approved for use on children. if you’re older than 40 and have presbyopia, which is an age-related focus issue, or cataracts, clouding of your eye’s lens, then you might be a better candidate for other surgeries.

If you have severely dry eyes, you might not be a good candidate for Lasik. Also, if you are a boxer, wrestler or cage fighter, Lasik might not be a good option for you because of potential facial injuries.

What happens?

Before you have the surgery, your doctor will educate you on eye health and Lasik. you should thoroughly discuss your medical history with your ophthalmologist to better ensure positive outcomes.

Lasik is an outpatient procedure, so you will go home the same day you have it.

You likely will be given a medication to help you relax, such as Valium. The medical staff might also give you antibiotic eye drops. you will also receive numbing eye drops.

The actual procedure takes about 15 minutes for each eye.

To start the surgery, your doctor will take a device that holds your eye lid open for you.

The doctor will use a laser to cut your cornea and make a flap. Photorefractive keratectomy is a type of laser surgery that doesn’t involve cutting, but the benefits and risks are different from those of Lasik.

Once the flap is made, the eye is centered automatically by the laser. Once the eye is centered, the doctor will send pulses of laser into the eye. These pulses are not hot. you won’t likely feel much while this is taking place, although you might feel some pressure. if you accidentally move your eye out of range, the laser will stop firing.

The doctor will fire pulses of laser over a time period between 10 seconds and two minutes, depending on how much correction is needed. It is not a continuous beam.

The laser will remove small amounts of corneal tissue, following a map of your eye that was created during your initial eye exam.

Once the surgery is complete, the corneal flap is laid back into your eye.

Many people can tell a difference directly after surgery. by the next day, you should see a positive difference in your vision.

Laser scanner boost for police (From York Press)

Laser scanner boost for police

8:13am Friday 29th June 2012 in News

POLICE in North Yorkshire are to start using new technology aimed at cutting the amount of time officers spend at crashes.

The 3D laser scanner can take images of the entire site of a collision, allowing them to be studied on computers at police stations, and North Yorkshire Police says it should mean fewer diversions and shorter road closures following an accident now it has arrived.

The force estimates officers will be able to spend 35 minutes less at crash scenes through using the scanner, funding for which came from the Department for Transport and the National Policing Improvement Agency.

Acting Sergeant Dave Foster, a senior collision investigator and one of five officers trained to use the equipment, said: “This is good news for the communities of North Yorkshire and York, as well as people travelling through the county, as it will allow us to reopen roads and motorways much quicker than before. it should help alleviate traffic problems and prevent long delays on our roads and also allow us to gather quality evidence, not just at the scene of collisions but at crime scenes as well.”

The scanner can produce video footage and still images and allow crash scenes to be viewed from any angle, as well as producing 2D line drawings which can be used as evidence in court cases.

What is laser hair removal?

Not every hair is welcome; there are plenty of times when either a hair, or a series of hairs, becomes undesirable. whilst there may not be any major medical disadvantages, there isn’t any reason why these hairs shouldn’t be removed.

To this end, you may be glad to hear of Laser Hair Removal in Liverpool services. a painless and effective solution, there are many benefits and advantages to utilising laser technology in hair removal that you might not have considered.

How it works

As the name suggests, this procedure involves the use of laser technology. however, the laser itself isn’t designed to cut or burn into your skin.

Instead, heat is applied directly to the hair. by using melanin, the pigment that controls the shade of hair and skin, the heat is passed down the hair where it is applied in full force to the follicle.

With regular sessions, spaced apart to allow recovery, the follicle itself is eventually destroyed. Not only is the hair removed but the damaged follicle ensures that the hair isn’t able to re-grow. this ensures a permanent solution to the hair, ensuring that you don’t have to keep getting it removed.

Advantages

There are various methods to removing hair, but laser hair removal is one of the best and safest. first of all, the process itself actually removes the hair. this isn’t a temporary solution, the hair isn’t simply cut off once it passes the outer skin and neither is it simply hidden. The treatment can take its time but the end result is a permanent solution to a permanent problem.

Likewise, the procedure is relatively painless. by using heat, there isn’t any cutting or burning involved. The skin may redden after each treatment but this quickly fades. The precise nature of the laser technology and removal procedure ensures that only the hair is damaged where possible. through this, not only is the hair removed, but clean, undamaged skin is left in its place.

Additionally, there are the psychological benefits that can also be considered. The main problem of unwanted hairs is that they are often considered unsightly. as a result, they can cause a major impact on one’s appearance, leading to a similar impact in one’s confidence and self esteem.

To summarise, there are plenty of benefits to laser hair removal. a safe and practical method of removing unwanted hairs, this process also has the added peace of mind by ensuring the hair doesn’t return. this way, you don’t have to keep coming back to keep the hair out of the way. after a few simple procedures with the laser, any hair can quickly become a thing of the past, allowing you to finally forget about it.

Laser firm has cutting edge

A Barugh Green laser company has experienced record growth sales despite the turbulent economic climate.

Cutting Technologies, which laser cuts and engraves a wide range of materials, has revealed its turnover has increased by 20 per cent in the first half of the year.

Jane Robinson, co-founder of the firm, said turnover for the current financial year is expected to top £3m, up from £2.6m.

She said: “Our growth figures for this year are already surpassing our expectations.

“We’ve made considerable investment in marketing in the last few months and it’s great to see that investment is already beginning to pay off.”

Jane said the company had received finance which allowed it to buy two new, state-of-the-art lasers last year. “They have opened up new markets for us and we are seeing substantial increases in our design-led, decorative work.

“While we are obviously delighted with our current growth levels, our committed and hardworking team is determined not to sit back but to build on our current success.”

Cutting Technologies was founded in 2003 and employs 28 people and has more than 500 clients world-wide.

Last month, the firm played a key part in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations by cutting parts for the jubilee beacons. Earlier this year, it cut a highly decorative screen for an ambassadorial residence in Israel.
